Editing using GIMP

I use GIMP for editing pics. I am having a problem  with a snapshot pic i took in IMVU. What is the step by step procedure for gettingthe background out of a pic and only leaving the AVI part of the pic?

here is what i do, keep in

here is what i do, keep in mind i dont use gimp i use psp, but my method doesnt require background removal...

when im taking an avatar pic in imvu with the imvu camera i use the button there to take the pic with no background, this saves the pic in your gallery as as png not jpg and everything but the avi/s is transparent, then i open the png in psp and copy it and paste it as a new layer on top of whatever background i want it on, this is the best way to get a really clean looking finished product without any kind of bleading or chopped pixels...

so i suggest redoing the pic as png, if theres no way you can do that then you are looking at promoting your image to a layer then using the magic wand type selector to select and delete most of the unwanted pixels then zooming in and dealing with individual odd pixels tediously then doing some sort of blur or smooth or resize to get rid of the chopped pixel look....

but that tedious stuff is not my specialty, who here uses gimp ? little help please ?? :-P

gimp and backgrounds

I use gimp and rarely have any kind of chopping or bleeding.  For me, however, I like to use a photo room that's readily available for sale in the catalog.  I use one that has a changeable background color and pick a color as far off from the image I want to save as I can.  the room has no shadowing, only one hexcode coloring for the background, which makes it easy to use the color select tool in gimp to remove all the extra.  then, again as you said, I save the file as a png to keep the transparency, or I work with it directly as a transparent layer, depending on what I do.

I like this method, simply because you are able to get more detail out of the finished product, as imvu's snapshots are hard to get big enough for much detail, without losing too much of the picture.
